The Borough of Swissvale’s 125th Anniversary + Swissvale Edible Garden Tour
Sometimes garden nerds can also be history nerds. To celebrate the borough’s 125th birthday - aka its quasquicentennial celebration - we’ll be pairing each garden stop with some local history. Find out more about the official borough celebration here, including how you can help.
In addition to the history notes at each stop during the tour, here are some of the other ways we’ll be celebrating our borough’s birthday:
Look out for recipe cards printed on a Swissvalian’s antique printing press! Take home a carrot recipe as a fun souvenir.
Local attorney and council member William Price will be opening up his office so visitors can view his historical displays during Open Gardens - stop in on July 22 between 10AM-1PM to take a look at his private collection of local history artifacts. The office is located at 2005 Noble Street. While you’re over there, stop into Bearded Iris Floral Design and Mudroom Vintage (2009 Noble St) and Still Mill Distillery (2033 Noble St). The closest garden stop is the Pittsburgh Mennonite Church, which has a parking lot.
At the post-tour picnic, we’ll have a House History table with resources to help anyone interested in digging into their home’s past. There are several free or low-cost resources that can connect you with all kinds of surprising information.
After the tour, on July 28, there will be house history workshops at the library - see more here.
