The Nebby Neighbor Garden Walk is an extended, crowd-conscious tour option. The Nebby Neighbor Garden Walk stops all have gardens that are visible from public sidewalks and alleyways. All of the Nebby Neighbor Garden Walk stops are also Open Gardens stops, but not all Open Gardens stops are nebbable.
8am-8pm Swissvale Edible Garden Scavenger Hunt

Throughout the 3-day event, kids and families can participate in the Swissvale Edible Garden Scavenger Hunt, documenting what they see from stop to stop. These activity maps were created in partnership with the Make It To Grow Artist Residency and can be picked up at the Swissvale Farmer’s Market and the Carnegie Free Library of Swissvale. Prize information can be found at swissvalelibrary.org. Please ask your children to respect the gardens and garden owners’ wishes regarding where you may travel within the garden.
6pm Welcome! + Homegrown Tomato Swap

Join us outside at the Pittsburgh Mennonite Church to kick off the 2021 Swissvale Edible Garden Tour! Bring your own lawn chair or picnic blanket if possible.
If you are harvesting tomatoes and want to trade and try new varieties, bring one or more tomatoes (any size or variety) to swap with other gardeners. Bring extra for non-tomato growers if you have a lot! If you don’t have tomatoes, you can bring other garden produce to swap (eggplant, zucchini, peppers, etc.)
6:30pm Kickoff Talk with Farmer Girl Eb

Urban farmer and educator Ebony Lunsford, known as “Farmer Girl Eb,” will discuss how she got interested in gardening, gardening in different kinds of spaces, and what excites her in the garden. Bring your own lawn chair or picnic blanket if possible.

Swissvale Library for activities, facts, and fun with Miss Cece about the bugs and birds that make pollination possible, especially bees! This program will be outside on the library lawn, but will move to the library basement in case of bad weather. Masks are required.

1pm Craft with Miss Cassidy Creates

Local educator Cassidy Adkins of “Miss Cassidy Creates” will lead a garden-themed kids’ craft activity to kick off an afternoon in the Swissvale Community Garden. This will be a free-flowing program time including music and stories, so feel free to show up after 1pm. Have your kiddos look for rocks they would like to paint on the way over (but we’ll have some extras if they don’t bring their own.) Bring your own lawn chair or picnic blanket if possible.
2pm Growing Fruit in Urban Gardens + Orchards

Help add perennial fruit bushes to our community-run garden! As the closing program of the weekend, tour-goers and community members are welcome to bring a beverage of their choice to toast to another wonderful event.
